Doi Chaang Wild Thai Civet Coffee

For years Civet Coffee, aka Kopi Luwak, has been considered a novelty. However, with an increase in demand, the animals are being farmed or caged and force fed. Farmers are taking advantage of high sales by doing whatever they can to produce the high priced coffee beans. Many animal rights groups are stepping in to try and save the civet, saying the ways they are being kept and treated is animal cruelty. There are many websites and social networking groups which are trying to stop or prevent the large coffee companies from purchasing the green beans and/or selling the high priced coffee.

Remember the saying, “You are what you eat”? In this case it plays a major part, if you were to feed a civet bad, old or unwanted cherries to begin with, it will result in a low quality product in the end. Many farms are keeping their civets locked up and monitored to make sure they are producing enough product to reach their sales goals.

Doi Chaang Wild Thai Civet Coffee is made from the eliminated coffee beans of wild civets that freely roam through the natural habitat of Doi Chang Village. At no time are the civets caged and force fed coffee cherries by the farmers.

The farmers of Doi Chang Village gather the civet processed coffee beans from the forest floor, flush the coffee beans from the remaining layers of fruit, sun dry and hand select only the finest wild civet coffee beans. The beans are sent directly from Doi Chang Village to Vancouver, British Columbia where Doi Chaang Coffee’s expert Roastmaster roasts the civet coffee in micro-lot batches to ensure the perfect taste profiles for Doi Chaang Wild Thai Civet Coffee.

Doi Chaang Wild Thai Civet Coffee has also been given one of Coffee Reviews highest rating of 91 points, click here to read more. Doi Chang Village produces anywhere from 200-300 kilograms of civet coffee per year, due to its rarity. Each 50g tin contains only 100% organic, single-origin, premium Arabica beans and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Doi Chaang Coffee Team in the Playoffs

Some members of the Doi Chaang team have been playing beach volleyball in a rec league in Vancouver.  While none of us are professional volleyball players, we have fun playing and spending time outside the office with each other.  Last night we managed to win all three of our games and made it into the playoffs next week.  All of the previous weeks of practice must have paid off.  After the playoffs we are starting the summer season of beach volleyball.  We are looking forward to another season of volleyball, and hopefully it will be warmer.

Check back next week to see how we did in the playoffs!

The Health Effects of Coffee

The health effects of coffee have been debated for years.  The Vancouver Sun newspaper recently published an article about the health benefits of drinking coffee.  The article cites studies that say that heavy coffee drinkers are no more likely to develop heart disease than low consumers or those that do not drink coffee.  A benefit of drinking coffee is the fact that coffee drinkers may have a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  Finally, the article mentions that drinking coffee does not lead to an increased risk of cancer over a lifetime.

So grab a cup of delicious Doi Chaang Coffee and celebrate the fact that coffee can be good for you.

Doi Chaang Academy of Coffee

Some members of the Doi Chaang team recently travelled to Doi Chang Village to help celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Doi Chaang Coffee Academy of Coffee and the 10th anniversary of the Doi Chaang Coffee Original Co.

Over 3,000 people came to the coffee facilities to help celebrate these important milestones.  The celebrations were open to all of the farmers in Doi Chang Village as well as the farmers in surrounding villages.  As part of the celebrations Akha singers sang traditional songs and some Akha singers who had left to pursue careers in music came back to sing.  Awards were given to members of the village who had shown outstanding leadership in the coffee company.

JM and Anand were invited to speak to the community.  Each expressed their gratitude to the farmers who worked so hard to make Doi Chaang Coffee a success and continue to help Doi Chaang Coffee prosper.

Daffodil Month

April is the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Month.  They will be selling daffodils and daffodil pins to help raise money for the fight against cancer.  At Doi Chaang Coffee we wanted to do something to help raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society; for the month of April we will be donating $2 to the Canadian Cancer Society from every bag of coffee sold on our website.  The donations help the Canadian Cancer Society “prevent cancer, fund research to outsmart cancer, empower, inform and support Canadians living with cancer and advocate for public policies to improve the health of Canadians.”  By buying a bag of Doi Chaang Coffee from our website you can help with the fight against cancer.

The Beyond Fair Trade Relationship

Doi Chaang is extremely grateful for the relationship we have with the famers of Doi Chang Village.  Our relationship allows us to help the farmers improve their lives and bring delicious Doi Chaang Coffee to North America and Europe.  Every year members of the Doi Chaang team in Canada travel to Doi Chang Village in Thailand multiple times.  This open relationship with the farmers has helped to move the company forward and bring added benefits to the farmers.  Being able to see the entire process of cultivating coffee allows us to fully appreciate all of the hard work the farmers put into their business.  Seeing the work the farmers do reaffirms our belief in “beyond fair trade” and how it gives the farmers fair compensation for their beans.
